The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is causing chaos worldwide and this is a hard time for so many. We understand how hard it can be to find new activities for your loved one who have disability during this lockdown so that they don’t get bored. This is why we have gathered a few activities that you can do with your family, including your kids and your older parents, while in isolation.
Artistic Pursuits
Drawing and painting can stimulate the right and left sides of the brain resulting in improved emotional mood and its
accompanying benefits according to experts. This could result in better communication, improved coordination, relaxation, and pride. Especially people living with disabilities, studies have shown that drawing and painting are extremely effective ways to express their feelings. Other benefits also include exploring their creative side as they can experiment with colors.
Sorting & Helping Activities
Sorting and helping activities make people, especially the older ones and the ones with disabilities feel more needful and useful which would improve their self-esteem and give them a sense of satisfaction and pride if they are able to help. Such activities may include:
- Color sorting with paint color swatches from the paint store
- Sorting out packs of playing cards
- Leaving clothes and fabric for residents to sort by color, size, etc.
- Untying knots (a dozen sailor’s knots for example)
- Unraveling a wool sweater for recycling
Board games and Trivia
A good brain exercise is always fun for the idle mind, chiefly during isolation when the brain needs a teaser. You could do things like:
- Crosswords
- Word Search
- Spot the difference
- Quizzes and Trivia
- Word Ladders
- Riddles
- Chutes and Ladder
- Catan
- Chess
Decorations and Craft
You could make amazing decorations using the things lying around in your house and it is an amazing thing to do to decorate your house. So what other time rather than during lockdown and isolation?
A few ideas for craft include, but are not limited to:
- Easy Tissue Paper Flowers
- Paper Envelope using printed paper
- Crepe Paper Garland
- Map Star Decorations
- Rainbow Paper Flowers
- Origami
In-door Gardening
Studies have shown that there are some amazing benefits in having house plants, including:
- Plants purify the air
- Some plants can improve sleep by drawing in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen
- Indoor plants increase focus and being present in the moment
- Plants look beautiful and improve your mood
- Plants are therapeutic and stress relieving
Some of the plants are easy to grow and are safe around people living with children, pets, and older people with disabilities. Aloe Vera, Snake Plant, Lady Palm, Spider Plant, Rosemary, Begonia, Wandering Jew, and African Violet are just a few plants that could be grown in-home and are easy to take care of.
