Understanding Supported Independent Living (SIL) Under the NDIS

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is one of the most vital supports funded under the NDIS. It is designed to help participants live as independently as possible while receiving 24/7 care in a shared or individual home.

At Assure Ability, we specialize in providing high-quality, family-values-focused SIL accommodations across Sydney. Here, we outline how SIL funding works, who is eligible, and how the application process unfolds.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding specifically allocated for assistance with daily tasks to build your capacity and help you live independently. It includes:

  • 24/7 Active Care: Support workers on-call or awake overnight to ensure safety.
  • Daily Living Help: Support with cooking, personal grooming, cleaning, and meal prep.
  • Capacity Building: Training to manage household budgets, pay bills, and coordinate travel.
  • Medical Supervision: Coordinating appointments and managing medication schedules.

Note: SIL funding only covers the support staff inside the home. It does not cover rent, board, groceries, gas, electricity, or personal transport costs.

SIL vs. SDA: What is the Difference?

Many NDIS participants confuse SIL with Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). It is important to know the difference:

Who is Eligible for SIL Funding?

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) allocates SIL funding based on whether it is “reasonable and necessary.” Eligibility generally requires:

  1. A Significant Disability: You require regular, physical daily assistance for core tasks.
  2. A Need for 24/7 Support: You cannot safely be left alone for extended periods due to safety, behaviour, or physical needs.
  3. An Independent Living Goal: Your NDIS plan states a clear goal to move out of home or live more independently.

How to Apply for SIL Vacancies

Applying for a SIL accommodation vacancy involves four key steps:

1. Check Your Current NDIS Funding

Make sure your NDIS plan has “Core Supports” or “Supported Independent Living” goals. If you don’t have it yet, you may need a plan review.

2. Contact Assure Ability for a Consultation

Call our intake team on 1300 263 544 or email info@assure-ability.com.au. We will review your clinical diagnostic report and NDIS budget.

3. Review Compatibility & Homes

We match participants based on age, goals, and interests to ensure a harmonious household. We currently have vacancies in Rossmore and Cabramatta.

4. Lodge Roster of Care (RoC) to the NDIA

Our team will compile a Roster of Care (RoC)—a document detailing the specific hourly supports you need. We submit this to the NDIA for approval. Once approved, you can move in!
